Students have been working together in groups of 4-6 on reading comprehension articles. The topics include Air Pollution, Forests, Deforestation, Wind Energy and Fossil Fuels. They have been applying their reading strategies to help them understand the meaning of their article and to respond to the associated questions in French. Once groups complete their questions, they split up into smaller groups of 1-3 to work on what is called a "Démonstration de compréhension" assignment, which translates to "Demonstration of Understanding".
In short, students use a format of their choice to convey their understanding of what they learned from reading the article. This assignment allows me to assess reading comprehension (they will use their own words to share facts that they learned from deciphering the reading passage), written expression (correct grammar, spelling and sentence structure) and oral fluency (they will present or making a recording of themselves pronouncing their sentences).
The proposal for the assignment is due on Monday, November 30th. This is a brief proposal, and students have had time to work on it in class. The rough copy of their sentences must be submitted by Friday, December 4th. The final copy is due on Tuesday, December 8th. Once their final copy is handed in, they will use their oral communication strategies to develop their fluency and practice for their presentation or recording.
The student-generated list of formats is as follows, but students are welcome to use a format that is not listed:
