Last week, students learned/reviewed one of the future tenses in French - Le futur proche. This is what we used to speak about things that are going to take place in the future.
The formation of le futur proche is relatively straightforward. It requires students to memorize the conjugation of the verb ALLER, which means to go (Je vais/Tu vas/Il va/Elle va/Nous allons/Vous allez/Ils vont/Elles vont).
A basic sentence in le futur proche has 3 main components: The subject (who/what) + Aller + Main verb
- The subject may be a pronoun (je, tu, il, elle, nous, vous, ils, elles) or a noun (ex. Michelle, Le chien)
- Aller is conjugated in the present tense to match the subject (Je vais/Tu vas/Il va/Elle va/Nous allons/Vous allez/Ils vont/Elles vont)
- The main verb is unchanged (when it is unchanged, it ends in ER, IR or RE and is in the "infinitive" tense)
Examples:
(finir) Je vais finir -- I am going to finish
(communiquer) Nous allons communiquer -- We are going to communicate
(descendre) Elle va descendre -- She is going to descend
Students are expected to have an understanding of this conjugation and to begin to spend time at home memorizing the conjugation of ALLER.
This week, we are moving on to the past tense. Students who have not yet memorized AVOIR and ETRE (which they were repeatedly encouraged to do in September/October) are asked to work toward memorizing them at home.
The video below goes over the steps for conjugation. I'm not sure about the audio (sounds like classroom chatter but not en francais!) but the information is useful! There are also worksheets for download so that students are able to practice at home.
