ETRE ("to be") and AVOIR ("to have") are our main verbs in French. They will be used in combination with other verbs when the students learn the past tense in grades 7 and 8, so it is important for them to have a good grasp on them now.

Most of the students love the songs that we use to review these verbs. Please click the links below to practice at home!
Etre remix
Say Etre (Kesha parody)
Avoir -- the kids love this video, but I must add that we pronounce J'ai "j-ay" (with a soft "j"), not "j-ay-ah" as the video says!

In grades 4, 5 and 6, we are working on learning to conjugate present tense verbs to describe the weather and our favourite activities in each season.

Les saisons: Video - Les saisons
l'été (summer), l'automne (autumn), l'hiver (winter), le printemps (spring)

La météo (the weather):
Videos - La météo:
Quel temps fait-il, mon ami? (song)
Quel temps fait-il? (Genikids weather reports)
Quel temps fait-il? (Slides of weather with time gap for response)
Quel temps fait-il? (Alternative expressions)
Quel temps fait-il aujourd'hui?
(what is the weather like today?); Il fait... ...chaud (it's hot); ...froid (it's cold); ...frais (it's chilly); ...du vent (it's windy); ...du soleil (it's sunny); ...beau (it's nice out); ...gris (it's grey); ...mauvais/mal (it is not nice out);  ...du brouillard (it's foggy)
Also: Il pleut (it is raining); Il neige (it is snowing); Il grèle (it is hailing); Il gèle (it is freezing)
It is not: To say "it is not", we place "ne" to the left of the verb and "pas" to the right of the verb.
- Est-ce qu'il fait froid aujourd'hui? (Is it cold today?)
- Non, il ne fait pas froid aujourd'hui. (No, it is not cold today).
- Est-ce qu'il pleut aujourd'hui? (Is it raining today?)
- Non, il ne pleut pas aujourd'hui. (No, it is not raining today).

Click here for a link to the worksheet explaining how to conjugate regular verbs in the present tense.
We are focusing on the verb "aimer" - "to like".
- En été, nous aimons nager. (In summer, we like to swim).
- En automne, ils aiment regarder les feuilles. (In autumn, they like to look at the leaves).
- En hiver, j'aime faire du ski. (In winter, I like to ski).
- Au printemps, elle aime sauter dans les flaques. (In spring, she likes to jump in puddles).
